Here’s Your Sign – Nov 9

Bear-Shaped Bologna

Ok, so this really isn’t a sign, but I did find this in a local grocery store the other day. Maybe it’s a sign I need to get out more. I must admit I ate a lot of bologna as a kid, and my favorite slice was always the one pressed against the front of the package because it was indented with the Oscar Meyer logo.

Anyway. Just in case you needed more proof that bologna is a sketchy meat, here you go. Any meat that can be mass produced in the shape of a smiling bear is suspect at best, though I can’t imagine actually turning down the opportunity to eat a Bear-Bologna sandwich.

It kind of reminds me of a gummy bear…except made of meat. Random mystery meats…and flatter. Yeah…definitely flatter.

Here’s Your Sign – Nov. 3

November 4, 2007 by Matt

I saw this display in the grocery store across the street from our school recently. Interestingly the packaging even has English on one side. On the front it says:

“The power apple from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s home country”

On the side we have these further details:

Healthy and strong
“Arnold” the Incomparable

This apple grows and ripens at the foot of the Austrian Alps in Styria with its fertile soil and unique microclimate of warm days and cool nights. Lovingly tended by skilled and dedicated fruit growers in their small and medium-sized orchards it is a rich natural source of health, strength, and flavor.

The Arnold Apfel isn’t a just a gimmick, it’s a really good apple. Juicy and flavorful as advertised. I can also see why it’s referred to as “the power apple.” My muscle mass has increased by about 20% in the 5 minutes since I’ve eaten the apple. I’m not exactly sure what these Austrian fruit growers are “lovingly” injecting into these apples, but I sure hope I don’t have to take a drug test any time soon.

Video of the Week – Fix My Frame

November 3, 2007 by Matt

This week we have an advertisement for a competition to “fix” Mr. Stockett’s frame. This video is a parody of MTV’s Pimp My Ride, except instead of XZibit we have 2V, and instead of a car we have a cheap Ikea picture frame. I think this was our highest budget film to date. I mean, 5 Euro. Wow!

The version shown during chapel was digitally remastered during 4th block. Check out all the sweet special effects that didn’t make it into the Chapel video.

How Does God Enjoy You?

October 28, 2007 by Matt

This is an excerpt from a book I’m currently reading called Gilead, which recently won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. It’s a wonderfully written book and I highly recommend it to anyone. I find there are quite a few sections that cause me to pause, reread and reflect. Here is one particular excerpt that I have been mulling over for the past couple of weeks:

“[John] Calvin says somewhere that each of us is an actor on a stage and God is the audience. That metaphor has always interested me, because it makes us artists of our behavior, and the reaction of God to us might be thought of as aesthetic rather than morally judgmental in the ordinary sense. How well do we understand our role? With how much assurance do we perform it?…I do like Calvin’s image, though, because it suggest how God might actually enjoy us. I believe we think about that far too little. It would be a way into understanding essential things, since presumably the world exists for God’s enjoyment, not in any simple sense, but as you enjoy the being of a child even when he is in every way a thorn in your heart”(Robinson, Marilynne. Gilead. p. 124-125).

I Love Ham – Geek of the Week

October 27, 2007 by Matt

No video this week because we had Friday off. But I do have an interview for you.

I had my 9th graders pick a geek to interview for their final quarter project and the first one I will share with you is a “conversation” between Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs.

I hope you enjoy learning a little bit about Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computers. Maybe you’ll learn something new. For instance, I never knew Steve Wozniak speaks with so many different accents.

This one is only 3:30. Just click play.
