February Break in Italia

May 30, 2007 by Matt

In Austria all schools get a week’s vacation in February for something they like to call Energy Break. Usually I just chill out at home for most of this break, but this year I got a cheap flight to Italy and traveled down to an area called Cinque Terre with 3 other teachers. Cinque Terre is a series of 5 old fishing villages connected by scenic trails and a train if you’re not up to walking. We were traveling during an off-peak time, so there weren’t a lot of people around, and at times it felt like we had the place to ourselves. I suppose the downside to being there off-peak is that most of the locals were on vacation and we had a lot of trouble finding even places to eat.

The scenery was amazing and it was nice to have a break from city life, if only for a few days. I had a great time, though I may hesitate to travel with three women again. 🙂 One thing I do know is I would not make a good Mormon. I mean, seriously. I can’t even keep one woman happy. What would I do with three?

Happy Birthday to Me

My Monkey Present

Originally uploaded by kleinmat4103.
Last Friday, May 25, I turned the ripe old age of 29 for the first time. It was a festive evening filled with good food and good friends. One of the highlights of the night was a homemade pinata with the Mets’ logo on one side and Tim McCarver on the other. It was hard to know which I wanted to hit more. You can see some action shots on my Flickr site in the “My Birthday” set. If you forgot to buy me a present, don’t worry, I do accept late gifts.

Kleine Paparazzi

Paparazzi

I mentioned before that we had Spirit Week at school, and we ended it on Friday with a school dance. Now this dance had a Hollywood theme, and what’s a Hollywood party without the paparazzi, right?

So Gardner and I led the way, assaulting incoming kids with dumb questions and large cameras.  The kids enjoyed getting some real Hollywood treatment, and we enjoyed harassing them.  So it worked out well for everyone involved.

And there is only one word you can use to describe this picture: Classy.

I’ll Be Back…I am Back

May 20, 2007 by Matt

So, it’s been a while. But I’m back to blogging and determined to keep this going on a regular basis again. I know…that’s probably the best news you’ve heard all week. Try to contain yourself.

Brief Update: Track season is over, my AP kids have taken their big test, and classes are winding down with final projects and the like. Softball season is well underway and we just dropped our 5th straight game after winning our 1st.

In summer news, I’ll be in Plymouth, England (not to be confused with Plymouth, NEW England) to start the second year of my Master’s program. After than I’ll be back in the USA for a couple of weeks before I fly back to Vienna for my 6th year.

Most of my next few posts will be backposts of things I should have posted this year, but didn’t get around to. So expect to see some of Matt Klein’s Greatest Hits 2006-2007. So now you have something to look forward to this week. Yay for you.

Bambi Schnitzel?

January 5, 2007 by Matt

Bambi Disney CartoonWhat would Thumper think?

I was at a restaurant when the waitress attempted to inform us of the special of the day?

after a few failed attempts at communicating the special…
Waitress: English?
Me: Yes. (hoping for some clarity)
W:(realizing she doesn’t actually know the correct English word)…umm…do you know Bambi?
Me: (baffled and looking at Trish for help) Bambi, who’s Bambi?
Trish: (before the waitress can elaborate) oh! You mean deer?
W: (relieved) Yes…deer. We have Deer Schnitzel today.
Me: (chuckling) ooooooh…Rehschnitzel.
W: (nodding enthusiastically) Yes, Rehschnitzel.

Of course I only know that the German word for Deer is Reh because of a friend of mine with the last name Rehmeyer.

I’m sure the BambiSchnitzel was delicious, though I decided on another entree. And thus concludes yet another adventure in German.
