Faithfulness

August 26, 2007 by Matt

Christ Church Vienna

This morning’s collect began with the statement,

“Almighty and everlasting God,
you are always more ready to hear than we to pray”

I think sometimes I regard prayer as a chore. Something that should be done…Something that God wants me to do. Like most chores, it becomes something that I can put off too easily. I rationalize the need to a preference. Sure my room could be cleaner, but I can make due with the clutter…and I don’t have the energy anyway.

What I miss out on by treating prayer in this manner is the bounty of blessing God desires to bestow on me. His blessings are greater than anything I can fathom, yet too often I toil away in prayerlessness attempting to do God’s work without God’s blessing. The absurdity of a life such lived is striking as I write it, yet remains too easily maintained.

God’s faithfulness is not dependent on mine. He is always more ready to hear…

VCS Softball Team Photo

July 2, 2007 by Matt

For the second straight year the VCS staff played in a coed Austrian softball league. It’s a good thing we were playing for fun, because we only managed 2 wins on the

season. It was a bit disappointing of a season, but it was great to get out on the field and swing the bat and throw the ball around.

The second picture is me taking some warm-up swings in the on deck circle where I am allegedly sticking my tongue out in a Jordan-esque manner.

Enjoy more pics from the softball season here.

Sweatpants on My Mind

July 2, 2007 by Matt

So today I’m in my room after classes and encountered an intense desire to be wearing sweatpants. I’ve been in Plymouth over a week now and everyday has been cold and rainy. Every day. It’s a stark contrast to last year, when a little AC would have been nice. And being the great planner I am, I only brought one long sleeve shirt and two pairs of pants. Sad.

I find myself drinking too many cups of tea and standing near the oven to absorb any heat I possibly can. With no end in sight, I may have to plan a sweatpants shopping trip soon.

Enjoying a Pisa Pizza in Pisa

June 30, 2007 by Matt

After we’d taken a bunch of pictures we went in search of a restaurant named Pisa Pizza. Get it…Pis-a pizza? Well at least that’s what I was searching for. Sadly, we couldn’t find such a place anywhere nearby and settled for some other pizza place with a leaning tower table decoration.

But honestly, how is there not a pizza joint in Pisa named Pisa Pizza? This should just happen accidentally, right? Isn’t that the greatest name for a pizza place ever? I can’t really be the first person to think of this, right? How is that even possible? I mean how cool would it be to order a Pisa Pizza?…in Pisa!

“Hey there, I’d like a Pisa Pizza?”
“Will that be one Pisa or two Pisa Pizza?”

I think I need a business partner. This would be huge. I mean, what tourist wouldn’t pop in to Pisa Pizza for a slice? I even have this logo design in my head with the leaning tower and a pizza-shaped slice is being served from it. This is money right here, that’s what this is.

Plymouth: Take 2

June 27, 2007 by Matt

Where's Waldo?Well I’m back in Plymouth now for year 2 of my Master’s program in educational technology. My cohort is much the same as last summer, but we have picked up a few fresh faces to help spice up the class. We’re halfway through week 1 now and we’re looking forward to having a lot of fun and creating some interesting projects.

Fear the power of many geeks united.

Snort, snort.

In other news, it’s cold here. I went from 27-30 degree highs in Vienna to 15 degrees and rainy. Makes me wish I’d packed more than one pair of pants. I might be forced to go shopping *shudder* for more pants if it doesn’t get warmer pretty soon.

Ok, think happy thoughts…sunshine, warmth, lunch, the Internet…that’s better.

My favorite quote this summer involved one colleague describing another as someone who understands all the “X’s and O’s” of computers. Hmmmm…That’s not the kind of binary I was expecting to learn this summer…
