Shin Guards in the Outfield

May 23, 2007 by Matt

As I’ve mentioned before, playing in a softball league in Austria is pretty entertaining. Last year, we saw a man playing in lederhosen and this year we played a team whose Center fielder was wearing shin guards to start the game.

I’m not really sure what his line of thinking was. Maybe there was a hole in his glove and he was afraid of a sharp grounder to the outfield. Or maybe he was expecting our offense to be a little more “aggressive.” Yikes!

Whatever the reason, it was fun to watch, and it’s always helpful to know beforehand who to try and hit the ball to.

Will I be destroyed like Edom?

May 22, 2007 by kleineklein

Tonight we studied the second half of Obadiah. It talks about how Edom is going to be destroyed both because of their pride and the fact that they stood by while Israel suffered. The verse that stuck out to me was verse 12:

“You should not look down on your brother
in the day of his misfortune,
nor rejoice over the people of Judah
in the day of their destruction,
nor boast so much
in the day of their trouble.”

I have been struggling so hard with the desire to see God teach lessons to others that I believe have something to learn. Of course, there are a plethora of verses to warn me against this, but this is the one that is making an impact at the moment. Why do I desire to see others learn hard lessons? Why do I take delight in the thought of another person being brought to their knees? Why does it make me so angry at God when I think someone needs to change and I don’t see it happening?

I feel that the only thing I can do now is pray that whatever lesson the Lord has for me in this is a lesson I learn quickly and learn well. I pray that what I learn is grace for others and trust in God to deal with each of us in the way that He knows is best because only He knows the best way.

Marathon Relay

May 22, 2007 by Matt

After running the full Marathon last year, I was ready for a little less running this time around.

Solution: Marathon Relay. Four of us teachers each ran a leg of the Marathon, finishing it in about 3 hours 17 minutes. Here is our official “after” picture. As you can see, we all wore authentic VCS Track uniforms.

I’ve been told people don’t want to see this picture because we’re all in track shorts, but I disagree. I think you really do want to see these pictures(Click Flickr link on the right for more).

Question: Which kind of shorts are best for running?
FACT: Running Shorts.

It was a hot day, but our team did well and we were well supported by our encouraging staff…even the ones that hate running. 🙂

VCS Track Team 2007

May 21, 2007 by Matt

Here we are getting stretched out for our only meet this year in Budapest. (More picks can be found by clicking on the Flickr sidebar to the right.) Where are the girls? Well, unfortunately we had a little border mishap. Turns out one of our girls had an expired passport and couldn’t get through the Hungarian border, so we only had room enough to take the boys. Very sad story since this was our only meet and the girls were really excited about running. Two of them in particular were the major impetus for other kids signing up this year, so I felt really bad about them not being able to go.

The boys did a great job, though, winning every single race we ran this hot day in Budapest. This is the first time in a couple of years we’ve been able to field a track team, and I’m really happy with the results. This was a great group of kids to work with, and I am excited about building on our success. Hopefully next year we’ll be able ot get a few more meets on the schedule, too.
