Zacharias’s Prophecy

July 14, 2006 by Matt

I just started reading the Gospel of Luke for my devotion time not too long ago, and it is a book I’ve read quite a few times. As I was reading through the first chapter I was moved by Zacharia’s prophecy following the birth of his son, John the Baptist.

I don’t think I’d ever realised how beautiful a description of God it is.  How He showed mercy toward his people, how He remembers His covenant, how He offers us salvation and forgiveness “that we…might serve Him without fear, In holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.”

But what humbled me the most were verses 78-79. In the moment I read them I understood again the wonderful love of our God.

78 Because of the tender mercy of our God,
With which the Sunrise from on high will visit us,
79 TO SHINE UPON THOSE WHO SIT IN DARKNESS AND THE SHADOW OF DEATH,
To guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Think about God’s tender mercy that caused Him to send His Son into this earth.  I love the imagery of the sunrise here because it shines upon the whole earth. That the sun would stretch its beams into the darkness of this world, so we may be led to peace.  It does not favor one land or people, but spins its way around the globe.  And people now squint into the horizon of new life and find a Savior.  A Savior sent because of the tender mercy of our God.

Hallo Katze

hallo_katze.jpgIf you’re an elementary school girl looking to start a garage band with some of your friends, I have the perfect guitar for you. A local music store here in Plymouth is selling this very *cute* guitar, and if you thought it was already too good to be true, I hear this particular model also comes in pink.

Eavesdropping at the Green Line Cafe

July 5, 2006 by Matt

This is another retro blog from my time in Philly. I was killing some time between appointments in a local cafe one day and overheard this snippet of a conversation:

Guy Drinking Coffee(to Guy with Skateboard): Are you a musician?

Guy with Skateboard: um…well…um…yeah…well…yeah…um…definitely. I’m definitely a musician. I mean, yeah.

GDC: cool…

GWS: yeah, I just bought a eukalele because I heard something George Harrison played that I liked.

GDC: that’s great…

GWS: So I’m learning that, you know.

GDC: cool, so what else do you play?

GWS: yeah, well…the only thing I have recorded is on the pan flute…

And this is where I had to bite my tongue to keep from snickering loud enough to be heard. Guy with Skateboard will be touring the Northeast with pan flute and eukalele in hand! Get your tickets now!

Kobayashi edges Chestnut in hot dog contest

July 4, 2006 by Matt

chestnuthd.jpgYes, this is an actual headline on ESPN.com. For those of you wondering whatever became of my long lost cat, apparently she has turned up on Coney Island. Here is a picture of little Chestnut devouring a hot dog during the contest.

I thought the description of Chestnut was a bit inaccurate, though:

“…Chestnut, a 220-pound civil engineering student from San Jose, Calif., who set an American record by eating 50 hot dogs during a qualifying tournament in Las Vegas.”

She must be incognito or something. I’m pretty impressed about her setting the American record, though. I mean, 50 hot dogs. That’s a lot. I didn’t even know she ate hot dogs.

I remember being in a hot dog eating contest at a Phillies game once. It was “Dollar Dog Day” and a few of my friends and I decided to have an informal contest. I remember eating 6 hot dogs and winning the competition. My friend Josh declared me the wiener. Get it? hehe.
