Highlights From America: Week 1

June 23, 2011 by Matt

  • While watching the Green Hornet on the flight over, we spent the first half of the movie wondering when and how Seth Rogan would transform into Ryan Reynolds. Oops. Apparently Green Hornet ≠ Green Lantern.
  • IN-N-OUT Burger = Yum!
  • Meeting our cute new nephew, Silas.
  • Seeing the whole Zimmerman clan again.
  • Juicy, thick, American steak – Delicious!
  • Discovered that running up hills at high altitude is a little more difficult than running flat in Vienna. Ugh!
  • Coke and Cherry Slurpee.
  • Watching 60-70 year olds play softball.
  • Shopping for new clothes!! My favorite! After something like 10 hours in the dressing room, I have some nice new clothes. I guess one benefit is that I now know my dress shirt size: 15 1/2, 32-33. Hopefully I’ll still remember that the next time I go shopping.
  • Tricia got a really cute new purse for only $5.80! She’s really excited about this. It’s red and shiny. Did I mention that it’s super cute? And it only cost $5.80?

We’re on to Philly tonight. I’m sure we’ll be adding some pictures soon. Stay tuned for more highlights!

Hallstatt Half Marathon

May 10, 2011 by Matt

Hallstatt
Hallstatt is a quaint little village situated on the edge of a lake that just happens to be about 13.1 miles around. Besides the fact that it’s beautiful, I like this race because it has a bit of a small-town feel to it.

Race number pickup and pasta dinner are hosted at the local firehouse. Families stand alongside the course or lean out their windows to clap and cheer us through the race. You can even be stopped by the local train (as I did) if you don’t pace yourself just right.

I beat my target time of 1:50 by almost 4 minutes, turning in a time of 1:46:22. Not my best time ever, but I’m really happy with it. Especially since I lost about a minute when I was stopped at the train tracks.

There was also a man running barefoot and dressed like a caveman.

Hallstatt

I had the misfortune of being passed by him twice. Let’s just say that his outfit didn’t leave much to the imagination. YIKES!

Dream Job?

March 4, 2011 by Matt

Dream Job?The following is an accurate representation of actual events the transpired on our living room couch:

Last night I was on mlb.com to listen to the Phillies spring training game, and came across the link to the right. Is watching baseball my dream job? Well, I don’t know, but it certainly doesn’t sound like a bad job.

*Click*

Tricia listens as I read the list of qualifications for the job.

M: Strong writing skills. Strong verbal communication skills.

T: Well you’ve got half of those.

M(ignoring comment): Strong organizational skills with the ability to give attention to multiple things at the same time.

T: Oh, you’re screwed, honey.

M: *sigh* yeah.

You’re Wearing THAT?

February 14, 2011 by Matt

Tricia: I’m not sure that sweater matches those pants.

Me: I’ve been wearing this sweater with these pants for more than 3 years!

Tricia: Well I never look at what you wear.

Me: *sigh*

ICSV Bball Update: 2nd Place!

February 4, 2011 by Matt

BBall at QSI After a tough loss against the VIS A team (44-30), we rebounded at Saturday’s Festival to take 2nd place.

The Basketball Festival is an informal tournament against the teams in our conference. We cruised in our first game to a 27-7 win over the VIS B team, but it was in our 2nd game that we thrived. Against ICSB, the Christian school in Budapest, we really jelled as a team. We played great defense, moved the ball well on offense and emerged victorious with a hard-fought 24-20 win.

Winning our first 2 games placed us 1st in our pool and earned us a spot in the title game against DIS. Though we played hard and well, we fell behind early and never were able to catch up.  Even in defeat, they kept their heads up and played good basketball. I am really proud of all of them.

Highlights from the tournament:

  • 2nd Place!!!
  • Not one, but two bank 3-point shots made by our team.
  • “Coach Klein, isn’t that a demonic symbol? You know, a Pentagram?” “Um, no. That’s a Star of David.” (Our tournament took place at a Jewish community center).

Watch this space for another update in the coming days.

Fly, Eagle, Fly!
