So I Got an UltraSound Yesterday…

May 12, 2009 by Matt

…and it’s a rupture. Or maybe bursitis. But it looks like a small rupture in my outer shoulder muscle says my doctor. He gave me the name of the muscle in German…or maybe it was Latin with an Austrian accent. In any case  it was about 20 syllables long and I’ve already forgotten it.

I injured my shoulder in an ultimate frisbee game over Easter Break, and was hoping that time would heal it. A month later that doesn’t seem to be happening. My doctor is hoping a cortizone shot will solve the problem, and I’m hoping so as well.

I have a follow-up appointment on Friday. Please pray that my shoulder is feeling better by then and that I can avoid surgery.

Honeymoon Pictures

Eiffel Tower

After several months of procrastination and a frightful day where I inadvertently deleted all the photos, (Oh, yes I did) our honeymoon photos are finally up on Flickr. Our moms may be the only people as excited as I am, so this post is especially for them. 🙂

Enjoy!

Exploding Maroni!

February 9, 2009 by kleineklein

Maroni (Chestnuts)

Maroni is German for chestnuts. I love maroni. During the winter there are maroni vendors all over the city. It’s one of my favorite treats. Hot maroni on a cold day – yum!

Well, because my husband is very sweet, one day he surprised me by coming home with a small bucket of maroni for me to cook myself. Yay! I hopped online to learn just how to make this tasty treat. I turned on the oven, scored an “X” in each of the maroni, and popped them in the oven. About 10 minutes later, we heard a loud bang in the kitchen, then another, and another…

As I peeked into the oven, I saw chestnut everywhere. I made Matt take the pan out (because he’s braver than I am). What did I learn? Well, the “X” has to be big. Big enough to cover the side of the chestnut. Otherwise, the steam created by water in the chestnut will cause it to explode as it heats.

The second batch was made with large X’s and it was delicious! To see all the pictures from this adventure, click here.

Want to make your own hot chestnuts?

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (210°C)
  • Score the nuts with a BIG “X”
  • Place them in a pan “X” side up
  • Cook for 15-25 minutes
  • When the skins look like they have curled away from the scoring, remove the chestnuts
  • When cool, peel and enjoy!

A Season of Firsts

February 9, 2009 by kleineklein

Christmas

We just celebrated six months of marriage. It has been amazing! As February begins,  we have been able to reflect on a season of firsts.

Our first Thanksgiving was fun – and delicious. We spent it with several friends, gorging ourselves on all the Thanksgiving regulars. I even made my first pumpkin pie from scratch. It was pretty yummy. 🙂

Our first Christmas was all we were hoping for – relaxing. Thanks to my family, our tree was overflowing with tasty American treats and lots of Phillies’ World Series paraphernalia.

Our first New Year’s Eve was, well, cold. We went out to view the fireworks, then came home where it was warm. It was fun to be able to reflect on all that has happened this past year, especially since it was this time last year that we decided to get married. A lot can happen in  a year!

The best part of all of this has been enjoying our time together, building traditions, and discovering new ways to keep Christ at the center of our celebrations. I can’t wait for a season of seconds!

Phillies Win!

November 3, 2008 by Matt

Last Monday and Tuesday were Fall Break here at VCS, so I decided to stay up Monday night and watch what I hoped would be the final game of the World Series. (God bless MLB.tv).

What followed was a game full of excitement, rain, and the first ever World Series game suspended due to rain. So there I was: the middle of the 6th inning, the score tied at 2 watching in disbelief a man with a microphone in his face talk about how they don’t know when they will complete the game. Not hours…days. I crawled into bed disappointed, but hopeful.

Tuesday was more rain.

Wednesday the air was cold, but the sky was clear. Time to finish Game 5. Since I had school the next day I went to sleep early. Or rather I should say I tried to go to sleep early, but giddy anticipation only allowed for about 2 hours of sleep before my watch alarm woke me at 1:30 am. I slipped out of bed and planted myself on the couch just in time to see Geoff Jenkins slam a ball into the left field gap for a lead-off double. This was going to be a good game. I knew it.

It was better than good. After a back and forth struggle Brad Lidge took the mound in the 9th with a 1 run lead, striking out Tampa’s final batter to seal the win, and commence the celebration. A dogpile of jubilation. The Phillies are the World Series champions for the 2nd time in their history and the first time in 28 years.

And though I was a bit tired Thursday morning, you couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. Not that day.
