Great Education Sites

One of my jobs as the computer teacher is to discover educational sites that help classroom teachers integrate technology into their curriculum. There are a lot of great things out there, but these are some of my current favorites.

Wordle creates word clouds out of whatever text you choose. There are so many things you can do with this. It’s a great resource!

Animoto is a site to create video montages with either pictures or short video clips. It’s really versatile and really easy to use.

Shmoop is a great resource for students and teachers. It has study guides for Literature and Social Studies. I also think it would be helpful for book groups/clubs.

Glogster is a site where you can create interactive posters. Lots of possibilities!

Fifth Grade Poetry Projects

Liz, the awesome fifth grade teacher, and I collaborated on another really fun project. Her class just finished a poetry unit and we decided to have them create poetry videos using Animoto.com. They turned out really well. The students did a great job of choosing music to fit the mood of their poems. I’m posting a couple below. You can see the rest here: Fifth Grade Poetry Videos

Broken Headphones

Student: Mrs. Klein! Mrs. Klein! I cannot hear anything. My earphones aren’t working!

Mrs. Klein: They will probably work if you put them on your head.

Student: Oh! Now they are working!

*Note: You must read the students first part with absolute frustration and the second part with a bit of joy.

VCS Elementary Wiki

One of the projects I’m working on this year is developing a wiki page for the elementary school. I’m using it more like a static webpage than a collaborative wiki, but it suits my purpose fairly well. It’s definitely a work in progress, but my goal is to have the links that each class needs to use in the lab, as well as in class, readily available to them. I like that with the wiki I can easily do seasonal pages (like Easter Fun) then hide them until next year. I’ve just added both Teacher Resource and Homework Helpers pages that I’m hoping will be helpful to everyone. Feel free to check it out, and if you have any sites that you think would be helpful, definitely let me know.
