Korean Cooking, Part Two No comments yet

Korean Cooking We had our second Korean cooking class on Valentine’s Day. This time around, Myunghee taught us how to make mandu and kimchi. Mandu are very similar to potstickers only they’re not fried. They are so yummy! I’m amazed at how easy they are to make. I’ll definitely be doing these at home. The other thing we learned was how to make kimchi. Kimchi is a fermented cabbage dish that Koreans eat at most meals. It is supposedly the healthiest food in the world. Or so Koreans keep telling me. The thing is that kimchi is a very strong, spicy, fermented vegetable dish. I really like it, but a lot of people (including Matt) do not. I don’t think I could ever eat it for breakfast, or even eat it everday for that matter, but I am glad that I know how to make it now. Black & White 9 comments

The theme at I Heart Faces this week is “Black & White.” These are my entries.

This picture is of my friends Thomas and Mollie’s son a few weeks before his baby brother is born. He’s practicing being a big brother. I really love how the light hits his face in this picture.

This is a picture of my friend Cindi during staff orientation. How can you not love that smile?

I Heart Faces

I like this week’s theme because I love black & white photography. I think you get to see so much more personality with black & white. I can’t wait to see all the enteries this week.

You can enter your own photos, too. Just go here:

Miracle Cure No comments yet

Brandwunden-Pflaster I have a tendency to be a little clumsy. This can be a bit of a problem in the kitchen. Last week I accidentally stuck my finger into boiling water. OUCH! It instantly began to blister and hurt like the dickens. I called my wonderful hubby to tell him that I had burned myself. Well, that I had burned myself again, but that it was a doozy. He came home with these Brandwunden-Pflaster (Burn Wound Band-aids). They are miraculous! A few seconds after I put one on I could no longer feel the burn. After two days of wearing these my burn was completely healed. I mean gone. You couldn’t even tell it had been there. Not only that, but the gel in the band-aid is so thick that I couldn’t feel any bumps to the blister while I was wearing them. Given my tendency toward accidents in the kitchen, I think we’ll be keeping a box of these close by.

My picture of the twins won 7th place! I’m so excited. There were 275 photos entered, and they were all really amazing, so I’m a little blown away that I made the top ten. Now I’m looking for which pictures I can enter into this week’s competition. You can see the top ten winners here: Top Ten.

Wonder Part Two 2 comments

Well, I’ve decided to be doubly brave and enter this photo for the adult category over at I Heart Faces. I’m pretty sure Matt is wondering how his track team of two is going to do against a track team of thirty. Crazy odds, but the boys did a great job.

Today I’ve decided to be brave and enter one of my photos into a contest at I Heart Faces. My friends Mike and Becky were kind enough to let me borrow their cute boys for this picture. The theme is “Wonder.” I think their eyes say it all. What do you think?

funny_hat_lady One of the fun things about living in Vienna is New Year’s Eve. People young and old traipse around the city enjoying the live music, wearing funny hats, and maybe even throwing a fire cracker or two.

I’m not usually one to judge fashion, but I’m pretty sure that hat doesn’t go with the fur coat. To each their own, I suppose.

I was sporting a pig hat and my Penn sweatshirt. Much more tasteful if you ask me.

I’m Singing No comments yet

So in a regular segment for my Computer Applications class I introduced a piece of software called Songsmith. The idea is that you select a style of music, sing into a microphone, and Songsmith writes the music.

The software is actually both amazing and awful at the same time. Here is an actual recording I did in class to demonstrate how Songsmith works.

Yeah, you probably won’t find me at the Grammys anytime soon.

Below is a commercial put together by the developers of Songsmith. Definitely worth the watch if you need a good laugh.

Robot Art 1 comment

robot_art So Tuesday I had the students in my robotics class attach a marker to their robot and attempt to draw a figure 8 on a large sheet of butcher paper.

After many attempts and minor tweeks, most of them were able to draw a shape that could be identified as an 8.  It was good for them to see how planning and preparation payed off more than just trial and error.

At the end of class I instructed them to clean up  and throw out the paper, but they insisted on keeping this lovely display of “art” which is now hanging in my classroom.

One group even signed it and titled it “Robot Art.” Someday you may find this hanging in a museum. Remember, you saw it here first!

Quote of the Day 1 comment

Elementary Kiddos

“My vacation was so, so great! I dreamed I went to heaven and it was soooo nice.”

You can see how precious this face is, so you can envision how precious it was to hear this quote from her as she was bouncing in her seat and giggling because she “just had to tell” me something.
